The Monroe SWCD offers a variety of educational assitance in the field of natural resources. We have classroom presentations available from pre-school to high school regarding the issues of soils, water quality, wildlife, forestry and the environment. We also do out of the classroom activities such as stream seining and discovery hikes.
The Monroe SWCD holds a 5th Grade Field Day each May at the Monroe County Fair Grounds. We assist with the Envirothon; a competition for high school students. The Annual Poster Contest is held for grades K-12 each spring.
The Monroe SWCD was involved in the creation of the Skyvue Outdoor Classroom along with the students, teachers and administration.
SWCD staff have also worked with the Broken Timbers Outdoor Education Center.
In 2009, Tammy Jones, Program Manager, became a member of the newly formed P-16 council. Renamed the Monroe County HELP Committee (Higher Education Learning Partnership), this committee was formed out of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Monroe County Commissioners and Belmont Technical College. The partnership’s primary goal is to significantly
increase the advancement of education or training rates beyond
high school and with adults through college enrollment and
vocational, skills or military training opportunities.
The Board of Supervisors has decided to implement a teacher grant program. One $250 grant will be awarded to a teacher/teachers who request funding to educate themselves or their students on conservation issues. Some possible projects include land lab development, teacher workshop costs, training on conservation issues and classroom projects promoting conservation. Applications must be received by September 20th at 4:00PM.
The Monroe SWCD also offers a variety of educational programs and workshops for adults including topics on pond management, wildlife, forestry and bee keeping. Be sure to check our calendar page for up coming events.
